About This Coffee

In most cases, we opt to offer natural-style coffees as a medium or light roast to highlight the fruit tones. But for this Kona Natural, we decided on a darker roast to compliment the chocolate notes we were tasting. Between the roast-style (dark) and processing style (natural), we've created a chocolate and blueberry pie-like experience for our dark roast coffee lovers. We recommend serving this Kona natural coffee with a little steamed milk, which reminds us of strawberry and chocolate Nesquik! NATURAL COFFEE To produce a "natural" process coffee, these coffee cherries were dried whole and cured for several months. What results is a deeply fruited, full-bodied coffee experience that has a fuller mouthfeel than washed coffees, which are the norm in Hawaii. Specialty-grade natural coffees are uncommon in Hawaii because they demand long term care and attention to detail. If the weather is cool or the coffee cherry takes too long to dry, the fruit sugars might ferment and taint the coffee; yet if it's dried too quickly, the brewed coffee may taste woody and the green coffee has a reduced shelf life. In dry countries like Africa, natural processed coffees are more common and less risky. But in Hawaii's moist climate they're costly, risky, and difficult to produce. Hence the relative rarity.
