Thuti AB
About This Coffee
Known affectionately as Thuti Fruity by the team, Thuti AB is one of the most unique washed Kenyan coffees we have ever tasted. Traditionally, washed Kenyan coffees are very purple in their flavour profiles – hibiscus, plum, juicy red fruits – but the Thuti AB is distinctly orange. We’re finding papaya, nectarine and cranberry 🍑🧡. Located in the Othaya Constituency in Nyeri, the Tuthi Factory receives coffees from around 380 local coffee farmers. Kenya’s coffee supply chain is dominated by a cooperative system of production, whose members vote on representation, marketing and milling contracts for their coffee, as well as profit allocation. Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), the umbrella organization that includes Thuti Factory, is one of Kenya’s larger societies, with 19 different factories and more than 14,000 farmer members across the southern Nyeri region. The Thuti factory is one of the smaller processing stations, with only 380 active members, and sits in the Thuti district at the foot of the Karima forest reserve, just northeast of Othaya Town. Thuti was founded in 1958, prior to Kenya’s independence from Great Britain Othaya Farmers Co-operative Farmer Field Schools in order to enhance and improve coffee production, Othaya Farmers’ Co-operative Society Limited has introduced Farmer Field Schools. This comprises of farmers of a particular region who come together and are taught about how to best tend to the coffee plants by trained facilitators. This is done at regular intervals and the sessions are held at a group member’s farm.
