DANCHE WASHED, ETIOPIA - Filter Coffee

Good Life Coffee

About This Coffee

We won the 'Best Light Roast' competition at the Food Fair and the title of 'Coffee of Coffees' with this coffee! 25 roasters from all over Finland participated in the competition. Perhaps our most popular coffee of the last couple of years, Danche, is making a comeback with the new 2025 harvest! Just as high-quality and delicious, offering a juicy and sweet cup of coffee. You can find ripe yellow fruit, citrus, floral notes and honey in the taste. This coffee comes from high altitudes, grown at 1950-2000m above sea level, at the Danche washing station in the Gedeb area, Gedeo zone, and is supported by around 400 smallholder farmers in the area who bring their coffee cherries to the Danche washing station. Generally, growing altitude correlates with quality, as the coffee cherries get plenty of light but are not stressed by excessive heat. This has come true in this coffee, as it is a very delicious and easy-to-enjoy coffee! The coffee is grown organically, but due to the roastery lacking an organic certification, it cannot be sold/marketed as such. The area has a rich soil that produces a large yield. The smallholder farmers' coffee farms in the area are about 1-2 hectares in size, with about 1800-2400 coffee trees per hectare. The trees produce about 3kg of coffee cherries per tree. After harvesting their ripe coffee cherries, the farmers bring them to the Danche washing station, where the coffee is processed for sale. The coffee is sorted by hand and pulped to separate the coffee bean from the berry layer. After this, the coffee is dry-fermented for 72 hours and washed in canals, where it is also sorted by weight. Poor quality beans float, and they are separated from the better quality, heavier beans. After washing, the beans are soaked in water for another two hours, after which they are dried for about 10 days. During drying, defective beans are removed from the coffee by hand. The Danche washing station is owned by SNAP Coffee, which was founded in Addis Ababa in 2008. It is a company focused on high-quality specialty coffee, which runs three washing stations in Chelelektu in the Gedeo area, as well as two partner stations in Uraga and Nensebo. SNAP has three main principles, which are: to produce consistent specialty coffee, to transfer knowledge/skills to the smallholder farmers they work with, and to promote waste recycling. In addition, they invest in the community by supporting schools, building roads, etc.
