About the beans, stickers and flavor illustrations that arrive El Obraje Castillo Washed Located high in the mountains of southern Nariño, Colombia, El Obraje is one of the region’s most renowned farms, with a history of excellence recognized by the Cup of Excellence (COE) awards. A Legacy of Family and Perseverance Run by Pablo Guerrero and his family, El Obraje carries over 150 years of history. After an earthquake destroyed their home in 1939, the family rebuilt it in 1969 with help from local workers. They initially grew apples and peaches, but eventually shifted to coffee due to the challenges of fruit cultivation. Pablo later introduced Gesha varieties from Panama, elevating quality and gaining recognition in competitions. Today, the farm stands as a symbol of Nariño’s coffee excellence and a vital force in the region’s economy. A Commitment to Biodiversity El Obraje places great importance on biodiversity. The farm is home to around 77 species of flora and fauna, and most coffee trees are planted within the natural forest environment. Before planting new varieties, the team first grows small test plots in flower beds, carefully observing how each plant adapts to the soil before expanding cultivation. This thoughtful process ensures long-term harmony between the land and the coffee it produces. Mineral-Rich Volcanic Soil The farm’s landscape is dotted with large stones that reflect sunlight onto the plants, and its volcanic ash soil is rich in minerals, creating an ideal environment for coffee cultivation. These natural conditions give El Obraje coffees their clean, elegant, and layered flavor profile. Flavor This washed coffee is carefully processed through 24–36 hours of fermentation and a secondary 24-hour re-fermentation, followed by washing and drying. It delivers the clean, refined character typical of Nariño, beautifully balanced by the gentle sweetness of the Castillo variety.
