KENYA GITITU - Espresso
About This Coffee
The Gititu wet mill is perhaps one of the newest mills in Nyeri, Kenya, being inaugurated in 2022, but it has quickly gained popularity in the specialty coffee world. In just a few years, production has grown steadily and the coffees have won awards for their exceptional quality. The mill is located on the red volcanic soils, fertile and rich in phosphorus, of Mount Kenya. With natural drainage, constant temperatures and abundant rainfall, the region creates the perfect environment for strong, healthy coffee trees that produce dense, flavorful cherries. At Gititu, this ideal terroir is complemented by the efforts of the team, which produces both traditionally washed and natural lots. The result is a balanced coffee with remarkable taste and vibrant aroma. Processing is done with care. Cherries are hand-sorted by farmers, separated by degree of ripeness, then placed on raised beds to dry for 20-30 days until they reach a moisture content of 10-12%. The coffee is then stored in the dried cherry pods for protection before milling and export.
