Bolivia Wilfredo Calisaya
About This Coffee
Bolivian coffees are a bit of a rarity in the coffee world at large, including at Huck, so we’re excited to roast this crisp, classic coffee from Wilfredo Calisaya and the team at Agricafé. Bolivia is a tiny player in the world of coffee., and over the past few decades, as farmers have turned to coca and other crops, that role has grown even smaller. There are single farms in Brazil that reportedly produce more coffee than Bolivia as a whole. Moreover, thanks to the logistical challenges of being a landlocked, mountainous country, very little Bolivian specialty coffee makes it as far as North America. Agricafé is trying to change that. The Rodriguez family founded Agricafé in 1986, as a means to mill and export their own coffee. The family runs four of its own farms, but over the past decade or so, with fewer and fewer buyers and cooperatives operating in Las Yungas, they've also made it their goal to promote coffee in the region. Agricafé's farms produce exceptional coffee, but one of their major efforts of late has been the Sol de Mañana farmer program. Agricafé works with small farmers in the greater Caranavi region to improve productivity and quality on their farms, then processes the coffees at Agricafé’s wet mill. While the heart of Sol de Mañana lies in the town of Copacabana, Wilfredo Calisaya farms near the town of Taipiplaya. He delivers coffee cherry to Agricafé, and the team there handles the washing, drying, and milling processes. This is an approachable, but crisp coffee, with notes of pastry, almond, and golden raisin, with a bit of zippy green apple brightness. This coffee was subject to a tariff upon import. The higher pricing on this product reflects added tariff costs for both the unroasted coffee and our packaging, while striving to maintain profit margins for wholesale partners who match our retail prices, in their businesses.
